- German matchbox holder inscribed on front with a crown surrounded by a laurel wreath border with the words Gott Mit Uns (God With Us). German soldiers also had Gott mit uns inscribed on their helmets in the First World War, To the Germans it was a rallying cry. Scratched on front by hand 'La Bassee.' Also on 'La Bassee' on scratched on reverse with a cross. La Bassee is a northern area in France, the battle of La Bassée happened 10 October-2 November 1914.

National Museums NI holds over a million objects in the collection, as well as this we manage the records and associated images for each object through a working database. The national collection has been almost 200 years in the making, and we recognise that thinking about collecting and collections has evolved over this time and continues to evolve.
