Object Name
Chainmail Purse
Description
Purse, a chain mail purse in silver coloured metal. Frame and chain handle of the same metal. Snap clasp lower edge trimmed with three triangles of chain links, ring on handle for wearing with a chatelaine. This metal chain-link purse has a silver hoop attached by two chains. This means it was most likely part of a chatelaine or possibly a finger ring. Very popular from the 1860s until the end of the century, a decorative belt hook or clasp worn at the waist with a series of chains suspended from it was known as a chatelaine. They were worn by many house keepers and were also a status symbol; the woman with many keys and responsibilities was the ‘woman of the household’. Also the more expensive looking the brooch and attached trinkets the wealthier the wearer. In the late 1800s, the medieval look was all the rage, so chainmail-like coin purses that attached to a chatelaine were stylish accessories for Victorian ladies. Mesh bags are elegant and deceptively tough. Purses are made out of the same sort of metal links used in armor so there are many great, intact purses left from this era.

National Museums NI holds over a million objects in the collection, as well as this we manage the records and associated images for each object through a working database. The national collection has been almost 200 years in the making, and we recognise that thinking about collecting and collections has evolved over this time and continues to evolve. As a result, some of our records may contain language and views that we now consider offensive and unacceptable, for example, reflecting racist attitudes. We are committed to addressing these issues, and to reviewing and updating our records accordingly. Working with researchers, communities and academic partners we are learning more about the stories behind objects, and we are committed to sharing these with our audiences. We welcome feedback.
