Description

This mural is one of 46 in the Northern Ireland Prison Service collection, which were painted on boards or partition walls in nissen huts at HMP Maze/Long Kesh. These murals were in the loyalist compounds. Entitled ‘The Spirit of Ulstermen’ this mural remembers the First World War Battle of Passchendaele in 1917. It depicts members of the 9th Battalion of the Royal Irish Rifles advancing. Passchendaele is also known as the Third Battle of Ypres.
