Description

This mural is one of 46 in the Northern Ireland Prison Service collection, which were painted on boards or partition walls in nissen huts at HMP Maze/Long Kesh. Most of these murals were in the loyalist compounds. Memorial to the nine soldiers of the 36th Ulster Division who received the Victoria Cross medal for valour, many of them on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Each plaque includes the recepients name, rank, and battalion. Only three of the nine lived to receive their medals in person.
