c. 1798 - Hamilton was one of the most important Irish portrait painters of the second half of the 18th century. He worked in London and Rome from the early 1760s and returned to Dublin in 1792. Thereafter, his portrait practice until his retirement in 1804 included many important figures in Irish society. Lord Edward Fitzgerald, twelfth child of the Duke of Leinster, was a leading figure in the United Irishmen, whose aim was an independent republic, free from British rule. He died in Newgate Prison from wounds received whilst on the run from government forces. The portrait is one of eight of Fitzgerald by Hamilton, the best-known of which is the three-quarter length in the National Gallery of Ireland.

National Museums NI holds over a million objects in the collection, as well as this we manage the records and associated images for each object through a working database. The national collection has been almost 200 years in the making, and we recognise that thinking about collecting and collections has evolved over this time and continues to evolve. As a result, some of our records may contain language and views that we now consider offensive and unacceptable, for example, reflecting racist attitudes. We are committed to addressing these issues, and to reviewing and updating our records accordingly. Working with researchers, communities and academic partners we are learning more about the stories behind objects, and we are committed to sharing these with our audiences. We welcome feedback.
