Maher, Alice (artist) -
c.1988
c.1988 - Based on Masaccio's painting of Adam and Eve. This couple are striding away from paradise, the male with a sword in his back, the female's belly eviscerated. Their hooded and tower-like heads are joined together by a chain and they are stepping into a boat which is full of water. Again the subject, inspired by art historical examples of this biblical theme connecting sin and sexuality, has clear echoes in a contemporary state controlled by religious beliefs and restrictive laws, divorce was illegal, contraception was for married people, same sex activity was a criminal act and abortion carried a 14 year prison sentence. (from discussion with the artist in March 2018) Made by the artist following her MA in Belfast.

National Museums NI holds over a million objects in the collection, as well as this we manage the records and associated images for each object through a working database. The national collection has been almost 200 years in the making, and we recognise that thinking about collecting and collections has evolved over this time and continues to evolve. As a result, some of our records may contain language and views that we now consider offensive and unacceptable, for example, reflecting racist attitudes. We are committed to addressing these issues, and to reviewing and updating our records accordingly. Working with researchers, communities and academic partners we are learning more about the stories behind objects, and we are committed to sharing these with our audiences. We welcome feedback.
