- Voluminous shirt of fine orange cotton printed with small dark red diamonds. C/F opening 22cm deep from neck. Large soft turnover collar. Front and back cut in one with dart and gusset at neck edge at shoulders. Blouse fullness gathered to neck seam. Full length wide set in sleeves gathered to armholes and cuff 2.1cm deep fastened with silver metal and smooth paste press stud. Vent 21.4cm deep and gusset at bottom of side seams. Label yellow cotton with brown print 'Worlds end/McLAREN/WESTWOOD/BORN IN ENGLAND' with motif hand holding scimitar. Hanging loop at C/B inside neck, above label. From exhibition label, early 2000s 'pirate' outfit: cotton blouse, trousers and strapped leather boots, c.1982 Vivienne Westwood (1941-) The pirate collection was successful and influential and, with the New Romantics collection, showed Westwood's ability in the 80s to continually reinvent her design ideas. As with many of her designs, there is an air of theatricality and fancy dress. Last year her pirate boots became 'must have' items.
