Description
colour : blue. design : hobble skirted dress of blue silk crepe, cuffs trimmed with chine silk. Red stain across back of bodice has weakened fabric considerably, some actual tearing has occurred. From exhibition label, early 2000s Blue satin day dress, c.1912 Worn in Belfast and bought in 'The Bank Buildings' this day dress has the narrowed skirts which developed into the 'hobble' style. A silk insertion at the hem aids freedom of movement. The French knots seen this otherwise plain dress were extremely popular at the time and are seen on many contemporary dresses. Exhibition Label, La Belle Epoque 2020 “Hobble” dress Around 1912 Silk Unknown maker English This day dress has the narrowed skirts which developed into the narrow 'hobble' style first introduced in 1910. The hobble skirt was so named because it was cut very closely to the ankles and in its most fashionable form made walking difficult. A silk insertion at the hem of this dress aids freedom of movement. The French knots seen this otherwise plain dress were extremely popular at the time and are seen on many contemporary dresses. National Museums NI
National Museums NI holds over a million objects in the collection, as well as this we manage the records and associated images for each object through a working database. The national collection has been almost 200 years in the making, and we recognise that thinking about collecting and collections has evolved over this time and continues to evolve. As a result, some of our records may contain language and views that we now consider offensive and unacceptable, for example, reflecting racist attitudes. We are committed to addressing these issues, and to reviewing and updating our records accordingly. Working with researchers, communities and academic partners we are learning more about the stories behind objects, and we are committed to sharing these with our audiences. We welcome feedback.
