Description
This double breasted South Down Militia officer's tailed Coat is fashioned from scarlet cloth with dark blue collar and cuffs. The hook up collar has two squared loops of gold braid each with a small gilt regimental button. On the cuff is an upright flap of braid on which four small buttons are fastened. On the back are two large buttons at the waist and two rows of four by two buttons on the false pocket flaps which also have gold braid decorations. On the tail you can see the badge of the Order of St. Patrick in sequins and silk with the motto "quis separabit" [who will separate us]. Down the front there are two by ten gilt buttons. The buttons show a crowned star with a circle inscribed and in the centre the badge of the Order of St. Patrick (without mottoe). The uniform is padded at the chest which suggests it is of a later period than the 18th century.
