Description: Northern Ireland Labour Party poster Referendum 1973. Northern Ireland says YES to UK Link, March 8th. The referendum asked voters whether they wished Northern Ireland to remain part of the UK or alternatively to become part of a united Ireland. The result showed 98.9% of valid votes in favour of remaining part of the UK but many nationalists boycotted the vote and the turnout was a relatively low 58.7%.
