Description

Square kerfed cedar wood box in shape of beaver holding stick in his paws. The inlay round the rim and the beaver's teeth have been made from nut kernels. This dish was probably used for holding eulachon or candle fish oil as a condiment at feasts. The men of the Northwest Coast of North America were master carvers in wood, slate and horn. For feasts, elaborate food boxes were made, usually in the form of an animal.
