- Object Name
- Pot : urn : encrusted
- Description
- Pot : urn : encrusted Rim bevelled inwardly and decorated with incised lines forming a herring-bone pattern. Externally a further three rows of oblique incisions are placed immediately under the rim. Applied decoration commences below the rim with broad pendant loops containing hollow discs. The angles created by these loops also contain hollow discs. This pattern extends for approximately 8cm and is terminated by a series of low cordons. The number of cordons varies throughout the circumference of the pot. Except for the upper one they are not applied but produced by wide deep grooving. All the encrusted motifs carry secondary decoration in the form of sharp indentations. The cordons are covered with a very delicate arrangement of light herring-bone incisions. The lower region of the vessel is ornamented with wide shallow grooves in criss-cross formation. The ware is gritty but compact, varying in colour from buff to pink with some dark grey patches.

National Museums NI holds over a million objects in the collection, as well as this we manage the records and associated images for each object through a working database. The national collection has been almost 200 years in the making, and we recognise that thinking about collecting and collections has evolved over this time and continues to evolve. As a result, some of our records may contain language and views that we now consider offensive and unacceptable, for example, reflecting racist attitudes. We are committed to addressing these issues, and to reviewing and updating our records accordingly. Working with researchers, communities and academic partners we are learning more about the stories behind objects, and we are committed to sharing these with our audiences. We welcome feedback.
