Scope and content: The origins of this company can be traced to 1840 when Samuel Kelly established a coal importation business, Samuel Kelly Limited, based at Queen's Quay, before venturing into ship ownership in 1861, in partnership with James Ross. The business was continued by his son, John, as John Kelly Coal Company and later by his son, Sir Samuel Kelly, as John Kelly Limited. The company now trades as Kelly Fuels Ltd.
