Scope and content

Correspondence and notebooks of Irish 19th-century entomologists. Includes a manuscript notebook marked “Geo. C. Hyndman” This likely refers to George C. (Crawford) Hyndman, a founder member of the Belfast Natural History and Philosophical Society and the Botanical and Horticultural Association. Hyndman was a renowned zoologist, perhaps best known for his work in marine biology and conchology. However, this notebook lists the insects found, with locations, which contributed to his collection of British and Irish insects housed in the Ulster Museum.
The archive also contains photocopies of letters between Friedrich Hermann Loew, the German entomologist who specialised in the study of Diptera, and Alexander Henry Haliday, a naturalist from Holywood, County Down.
