Archive of Joseph Isaac Spadafora Whitaker, born in Palermo in 1850. Whitaker was an ornithologist, archaeologist and sportsman. A member of the British Ornithologists' Union, he undertook ornithological fieldwork primarily focused on the bird species of Sicily and the Mediterranean. Part of his mounted bird specimen collection was bought by the Ulster Museum after he died in 1936.
His archaeological pursuits led to the discovery of significant Phoenician artefacts during excavations of the island of Motya. This archive contains letters, receipts, manuscript notes, sketches, and photographs.
