This small archive contains a manuscript, typescript, drawings, and photographs created by or related to Ethel Sainsbury, nee Stevenson, who was known as Effie. The manuscript and typescript recollect her upbringing on the Newtownards Road, Belfast. The manuscript is titled, "A Wee Walk to the Shops: Gems from a Newtownards Road Childhood", and the typescript is titled, " Childhood Memories of Shops and Shopkeepers, Newtownards Road, 1929-1939." Separate pencil drawings complement the text with illustrations of street life, including children playing games, the Coronation of 1937, the Knock Road Tram, the Popular Picture Theatre on Pitt Street, shop fronts and interiors, such as Desano Ices, and industries including the Baltic Timber Company and Belfast Ropeworks. In addition, there are a series of photographs of Effie and family taken at various locations, including Donaghadee, and two family trees.
