Scope and content

A diary recording the daily chores and observations of, presumably, a gardener over three years of work at Curragh-Ard [Curraghard] Lodge / Cottage, Tullybrannigan [Tollybrannigan], Newcastle, County Down. Reference is made to digging trenches, sowing seeds for peas, turnips, and melons, pruning of gooseberry and strawberry bushes, scarecrows, greenhouses, and beekeeping. An account of the weather is recorded each day, along with news clippings on the subject, one written by Andrew Rintoul of Fairleigh House. There are almost daily references to the work of a man named Watt. Further entries include the death of a man named Dodds [Robert Dodds is listed in the street directories as a farmer in Tollybrannigan at this time] and a visit to Lady Mabel Annesley.
