Scope and content
Manuscript book written by workers from Ewarts Linen Mill, Bedford Street, Belfast. Bound in one volume are handwritten, illustrated periodicals, titled 'The Splash', arranged in numerical and chronological order for the years 1915-1916, promoting a soldiers' fund, with departments within the mill sending cigarettes, chocolates, etc. to prisoners of war through whist drives, picnics to Helen’s Bay, dances and other efforts.
Contents include articles on fashion, gossip, poetry, and cartoons. There are also pieces on women's suffrage and a memorial list of Ewart's staff. The main person involved seems to have been a Mary Flanagan. It is a fascinating document of the First World War and also the social history of linen mills and Belfast at that time. Inserted is a postcard from William Flanagan, who was a POW in Switzerland, to Thomas Pritchard at the District Asylum on Belfast’s Grosvenor Road.
