Scope and content
Passport documentation issued to John March in July 1849, featuring handwritten travel permits and country stamps, signed by the British Foreign Secretary of the time, Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston. The passport is written in French and was issued in London on 24 August 1849. Enclosed in a leather sleeve stamped with John Marsh's name, it also contains numerous travel stamps and a written quarantine letter, presumably from Gothenburg, Sweden, which states that 'it is added that neither Cholera Morbus nor any other pestilential disease prevails in the city or the neighbourhood and that Mr. John Marsh has not, during the period prescribed in the constitution of the quarantine, stayed in an infected or foul-smelling place.'
