Letter from John Cleland to his mother. John writes that he is very happy here in Carlscrona, where the fleet has been since the 4th June. The Gorgon has acted as guard ship 'transacting all the business of the port'. He writes that he does not much like the appearance of the Continent: 'Sweden is entirely rocks, and the inhabitants are a wild set of people.' He spends four or five days a week on shore, shooting wild ducks and other fowl. He says the Navy does not expect the Russians to come out this summer, and if they do not the British will destroy them in harbour. Sent from the HMS Gorgon off Carlscrona to Downpatrick.
