Cleland letter
Scope and content
Letter from John Cleland to his aunt and uncle. Mentions a battle between the Austrians and the French on the 28th where the French were defeated with the loss of 16,000 men and 10,000 taken prisoner. He says the Russians are now marching an army of 70,000 men to join the Austrians, and the Swedes, 'prosecuted by famine and disease are making all possible efforts to stand out against the Russians.' John says he is enjoying his time on the ship with a good Captain and jovial companions. He says if he had as many sons as he had fingers he would send them all into the Navy as they would undoubtedly be happy there. Sent from the HMS Gorgon off Carlscrona to Downpatrick
