Scope and content
Letter from John Cleland to his brother, Hugh Cleland. John is upset to hear about the death of his aunt, 'as she has left so many helpless children behind her, and indeed I am utterly ignorant what shall become of them...' John says the boats of the squadron has an action with a flotilla of Russian gunboats on the 26th July - 'the greatest number of which we have either taken or destroyed but not without considerable loss.' He says they do not expect the Russian fleet this season, and will thus send out a fleet next summer. John says they will be home at the end of October as the weather is so severe then that it is impossibe to keep a fleet out. Sent from the HMS Gorgon off Carlscrona to Downpatrick.
