Letter from John Cleland to his mother. John talks of his journey from Glasgow to London and then his examination for becoming a surgeon. He says that a new regulation means that anyone wishing to become a surgeon must be over 22 years old, and because John is 21 he can only be appointed as an assistant surgeon and must wait another year. John says he will have to get his uniform which will cost him ten pounds. Sent from London to Downpatrick
