Scope and content
Letter from John Cleland's father to his son. He says he recieved John's letter asking for money, but the sum was so great his parents could not raise it and so had to ask John's grandfather to lend it. He asks that John keeps good company in London, refrain from drinking and be mindful of his duty to God. He is sending John a bill of 40 guineas and asks that John spends as little as possible, and that the East India Company would be preferable to get into than the Navy. Sent from Drumaglish.
