Letter to John's brother, Hugh. John writes that on 2nd July the St George's surgeon was appointed to the Gorgon, and that John was acting surgeon on the ship until he was superseded by a surgeon from England. He said Captain Guion wrote 'as strong a commendatory letter as possible to the [Transport] Board' asking that John be made surgeon for any of His Majesty's Ships. He says if there is no prospect of his promotion he shall go to the West Indies where a promotion is certain. He says the living conditions are pleasant on the ship, with fresh beef, fowl, vegetables and fruit available. He says they expect peace with Russia soon. Sent from the HMS St George off Hano Bay to Hugh Cleland at Downpatrick.
