Scope and content
Letter to John's brother, Hugh. John writes that he was superseded from the Helden and has returned to the HMS St George. He had many promises from gentlemen of great interest that he would be confirmed to the Helden, but 'Captain Guion found to be nothing more than nominal friends.' John swears that this is the last summer that he shall spend in the navy unless he is promoted. He says after leaving Spithead he has lost two dozen shirts and one of stocking(?) which he values at £30. Sent from HMS St George off Hano Bay to Hugh Cleland at Downpatrick.
