Letter to John's brother, Hugh. John is sorry to say that he cannot leave the ship for more than fourteen days, meaning he cannot return home to see his family for the time being. Mentions the ship preparing for a possible expedition and that trouble may be brewing in Ireland. Says he encountered a W. Smyth while on shore in Portsmouth, who was appointed to the Princess Caroline of 74 guns. John says he wanted to ask Smyth about 'my old acquaintances in Hibernias Isle.'
