Scope and content: The Ordnance Survey of Ireland was established in 1824 to map the boundaries, designating townlands, parishes and counties. Additional qualitative data on antiquities, topography, social economy, geographical features, farming, customs of the people, and population statistics formed the basis of the OS Memoirs compiled the following decade. This archive contains extracts from the field memoirs compiled by the Royal Irish Academy for various parishes in Counties Derry/Londonderry, Fermanagh, Armagh, Down, Tyrone, and Antrim on subjects including the Roman Catholic Church, the religious composition of schools in Fermanagh, the islands and fisheries on Lough Neagh and a photocopy of a lecture by the Northern Ireland Office of Statistics from 1965.
