Questions about Traps and Snares
-
Scope and content
-
"We are interested in the occurrence in Ulster of various types of trap and snare for catching game. These were all made of twigs and twine, or twigs and straw – we are not interested in wire or steel contrivances. This is part of a more extensive enquiry being carried out by my colleagues in Dublin. We would ask you to examine the enclosed drawings, and then answer the following questions."
A. Is the pyramidal bird crib or “Claven” (Fig. 1) known in your area?
B. Is the snipe snare (Fig. 2) known in your area? (The snipe steps on the platform, fashioned from the forked stick with the crossing twigs, and is caught by the legs)
C. Are pit-falls for catching hares or wild geese known in your area?
D. Describe any other form of animal or bird cage, trap or snare known to you, other than steel or wire contrivances.
