Evelyn Hofer is one of few women to have focused on the conflict in Northern Ireland, though her work foregrounds the people and not the signs of violence between the parties to the conflict. The majority of the series acquired from Crossmaglen, 1974 entitled ‘In the Eye of the Storm’ consists of portraits of the local community. Hofer photographs people in their everyday surroundings and in public places such as the market square, the pub or the church. She places a special focus on children and families. The surrounding landscape can also be seen - in pictures showing the landscape or the location of the settlement, and as a background in some portraits.
