Cleland Chapbooks

This collection of printed chapbooks dates from the end of the eighteenth and early years of the nineteenth century. They are a reliably transcribed record of the words of a vast range of songs that were composed and sung locally in the Ulster countryside in the generation prior to the Great Famine of 1845-49. As far as is known, they are a uniquely comprehensive and locally printed collection of songs from a largely oral culture that has long disappeared.

They have been researched most recently by Dr John Moulden, Marie Curie Research Fellow, Moore Institute, National University of Ireland at Galway, who has made an extensive study of the lyrics contained in these chapbooks.
