Garland Collection
The Garland Collection was purchased by the Ulster Museum in 1989. It consists of two albums of photographs and strip film negatives relating to German air raids on Belfast on 15/16 April and 5 May 1941, and the work of the city’s Air Raid Precaution force. The images were taken as an official record of the aftermath of this Blitz by H. W. Garland, a member of the Belfast A.R.P., through the auspices of the Ministry of Information. They provide a unique record of the devastation suffered by Belfast during two periods of sustained bombing, the first of which tragically saw over 900 deaths, the heaviest loss of life in one night sustained by any Blitzed British or Irish city save London.
