Scope and content: Letter from John Cleland to his father. John says that he received the money in the form of gold from M. Leslie and Co. this day, and that his father does not need to worry about John spending it foolishly. He says he is not of his father's opinion in preferring the East India service to the Navy, as 'in summer the sea air is not so warm as at land and in winter it is not so cold and not being liable to so many changes it is more healthy and a fortune is to be made there as fast as in India.' He mentions his mother sending shirts and a couple night caps to him but if they do not arrive by the 28th he will not receive them as he will be away. He says half of all the Irishmen at college are going but only two going with John, one is M. Kennedy from Rathlin Island and the other a M. Hay from Monaghan. Sent from Glasgow to Drumaghlis.
