Our diverse maritime collections reflect our enduring relationship with the sea, from building great ocean liners like the Titanic, to the way of life of our coastal communities.
Inevitably, the ill-fated story of the Titanic, the most famous ship in the history of the world, is ever prominent in the public imagination.
However, our collection places Titanic and her sister ships within the broader fifty-year relationship between the Belfast ship builder, Harland & Wolff, and the White Star Line.
This can be explored through our extensive collection of photographs, ship plans and other objects that provide remarkable insights into this story of innovation and industrial prowess.
Highlights of our aviation collection include a replica of monoplane built in 1911 by Harry Ferguson, the brilliant inventor and engineer, which includes the original pilot’s seat and 35hp JAP V8 aero engine. Ferguson built and flew the first successful powered aircraft in Ireland in 1909 in Hillsborough and our monoplane is a later version of his original pioneering design. The story of local aviation is also powerfully reflected in our Shorts SC1 which was built in the late 1950s as one of the first fixed wing aircraft capable of vertical take-off. These and more can be discovered in our Flight exhibition at the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum.
