The Belfast-born John Templeton was one of the most influential naturalists that Ireland ever produced.
Although he published very little, Templeton was considered by many, including his contemporaries, to be the ‘father of Irish natural history’. Poor health enabled him to develop his boyhood interest in the natural world, rather than go into the family business. Fortunately, he had the means to devote his life to the study of nature. His research was almost exclusively Ulster-based, particularly around the Belfast area.
