Stereoscope Photograph showing a view of signallers keeping lookout on the eve of the Somme. ‘On the eve of the great Somme push, signallers keep a sharp lookout over the Sausage valley’ Signalling by heliograph, semaphore and fire beacons was one form of communication. Also used were telegraphy, field telephones, dispatch riders, postal services and wireless as well as runners and carrier pigeons. The signalling work was done within the Royal Engineers.
