Description

Bolt action riflle. UVF stamped on butt. Gewehr 88. The Gewehr 88 bolt action rifle was commonly known as the Model 1888 Commission Rifle. Approximately 9,000 were in the consignment of weapons and ammunition smuggled to Ireland from Germany on the SS Mountjoy in April 1914. Once in Ireland, many were stamped ‘UVF’ on the butt. The Special Service units of the Belfast regiments were an elite group, tasked with such responsibilities as guarding Craigavon House, home of James Craig MP. This was a tense period: it was feared that the British Government would use force to arrest the Unionist leadership and stop the anti-Home Rule campaign.
