Scope and content
Material relating to John Gordon, a mid-19th-century education professional. He entered the National Board as a teacher and was trained at the Central Normal School in 1845, where he attained the rank of First Division of First Class. In 1849, he attended Queen's University Belfast, where he was a science scholar and mathematical prizeman. He received a special certificate of training and classification in 1853 from the Education Office. In 1852, he was appointed Lecturer of Chemistry and Natural Philosophy at the Liverpool Mechanics Institution. Here he studied and taught Experimental Science for two years. In 1854, he arrived in Canada and was appointed Head Master of the Peterborough County Grammar School. He was then appointed Head Master of the Port Hope County Grammar School. He resigned from this post on May 2nd 1865. On May 3rd 1876, he applied for a Head-Inspector in Ireland
