Born in East Belfast, the second of six children, H.R. Lilley (1886-1970) joined the Belfast firm of Robert McBride and Co., linen manufacturers, as an apprentice designer in 1901, aged 15. An artist and textile designer, this archive consists of designs (pencil or painted) for print and embroidery, for use as advertising posters, linen, handkerchiefs, and towels. There are drawings, often floral and ornamental, and resource folders containing: cards, clippings, photographs, motifs, etc. on various subjects, including insects, birds, trees, seascapes, sports, boats, music, architecture, costumes, dance, children, heraldry, uniforms, animals, plants, gardens, and wartime figures such as Churchill and Hitler. Other contents include Christmas cards, cigarette cards, samples or samplers, letters, Irish stamps and postcards, cartoons, miscellaneous threads, bottles, and boxes.
