- John Edgar was born in 1798 in Ballynahinch. He was involved in religious and charitable institutions, the antislavery movement, temperance, famine relief and the promotion of the Irish language. Ordained in a secessionist Presbyterian congregation in Alfred Street, Belfast he became a Professor of Systematic Theology for the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland; Professor of Divinity at Belfast Academical Institution and Moderator of the Presbyterian General Assembly. The archive includes correspondence presumably by and from John Edgar; a letter from New York University to President John Edgar Park of Wheaton College, (1929) confirming the award of LL.D to John Edgar; a book review of a memoir of John Edgar by W.D. Killen; handwritten notes with corrections possibly from the memoir; a letter dated 17th August 1866 addressed to "My Dear Doctor" Also communication from Illinois State Historical Library about John Edgar of Kaskaskia.
