- Lightships or lightvessels are ships that act as lighthouses when waters are too deep or conditions are unsuitable for lighthouse construction. This collection contains logbooks about Skullmartin Rock. Contents: a logbook starting on August 29th, 1898, ending on March 31st, 1899, for the ‘Brilliant’ lightship at Skullmartin Rock, a mile off the coast of Ballywalter, containing information such as the initials of men on watch, times of lighting and extinguishing, general remarks about the weather, ship passings, local climate conditions, signatures of men in charge, etc.; a log for the same lightship and location, starting December 25th, 1901, ending, July 4th, 1902; the same logbook for Skullmartin Rock instead concerning the lightship ‘Cormorant’ from July 5th, 1902, until, February 1st, 1903.
