Captain H. N. Clarke was a steamship master from 1936 who worked on many Head Line ships throughout his career. This archive contains possessions and documents relating to his work and Head Line Company. Contents: two continuous certificates of discharge issued by the Board of Trade indicating operation of ships such as the Bengore Head, Melmore Head, Kenbane Head, Carrigan Head, etc. (1921-37), (1937-44); a certificate of competency for master of steamships (1948); medal bands; ‘round the North Atlantic’ text (1958); photographs of sailors (undated); The Navigators and Engineer Officers’ Union Membership Book (1945); ‘The Merchant Marine Service Association Rules and Regulations and list of Legal Representatives for the Imperial Merchant Service Guild; blank postcards of Head Line vessels; a two-year company service contract between G. Heyn and Sons Ltd. and Clarke (1963); a portrait of Jeremy [?]; various letters to Clarke from G. Heyn and Sons Ltd. testifying to his apprenticeship on vessels and subsequent occupation as third officer on others; personal typescripts and handwritten notes on ‘The Red Hand of Ulster’ and Christian themes; premiums received of £50 for Clarke from G. Heyn and Sons Ltd. for work and apprenticeships (1907/21); a cash book; letters from the British India Steam Navigation Company indicating Clarke’s commanding of the Empire Boswell in 1947 by the Marine Superintendent; various rent payslips of £17 in the 1950s.
