Newspaper scrapbooks from the 19th and 20th centuries.
A newspaper scrapbook belonging to William Swanston F.G.S. (1841-1932), ex-president of Belfast Naturalists’ Field Club (dated 1883). Contents: a complete, alphabetical index of all the topics in the book with page numbers, including: ‘Ancient Ford of Belfast,’ ‘Census 1871,’ ‘Flies- Plague of the Lower Bann,’ ‘Harp Irish,’ ‘Irish Slate Trade,’ ‘Killough,’ ‘Nightingale in Ulster,’ ‘Tidal Wave on the West of Ireland,’ ‘Warrenpoint,’ etc.; hundreds of newspaper articles, often dated using pencil; a fresh bread voucher; an affixed circular letter on geology. Perry & Co.’s Spring Letter case containing a booklet on ‘A statistical survey of the County of Londonderry; a magazine clipping of a building at Ickworth, Suffolk; a cover of the Belfast Telegraph issue June 6th, 1927; a booklet on ‘St. Columba as a poet’; newspaper clippings on ‘Days in Inishowen’; a July 1906 Ulster Journal of Archaeology; a postcard from 1930; a poster of a harp player; Northern Constitution April 16th, 1927 article; 1917 article on Downhill; 1927 article on the ‘beauties of Castlerock’; a note concerning Downhill House from 1830; historical notes on Limavady; ‘Land of O’Cahan’ story; booklets and newspaper articles on the ‘Abbey of Dungiven’; Bovevagh Church clippings.
A season 1929-30 scrapbook containing various photographs and newspaper clippings; photographs of women in Ballymoney (1936); a baby photograph from 1936; a photograph of Mr. Getty, a woman in Philadelphia (1936), ‘Annie’ (1939), a woman (1939), Rose Ann (1922), ‘Walter Dennis Cohen (1928), a wedding day photo, family photos from the 1930s with dog ‘Whoopee,’ Maggie Hale with a friend; various newspaper clippings from County Antrim (1930s); a ‘Tean White’ illustration; loose Belfast Newsletter page on the Chinese war on religion (1927); a postcard of Howth; blank flashcards; a handwritten note on someone’s death; a letter concerning Antrim House (1932); a handmade map of Philadelphia; newspaper clippings on subjects including: Presbyterian ministers, a County Antrim wedding, developments in the county, Ayr old church ceremony, the reopening of Ballymoney Town Hall, Holywood gas tragedy (1933), ‘Beside the Bann,’ ‘The Campbells,’ Ballymoney old tower, ‘The Water Crisis (1929), Ballymoney on the air, ‘Roman Catholics and Loyalty,’ ‘a local anthology’ (Coleraine), the parish of Dunluce, ‘a North Antrim Tragedy’; various obituaries affixed at the back of the book.
A log book for proceedings on board the Wellesley dated 1845 converted into a newspaper scrapbook with documents, unfortunately, sellotaped down. Contents: a crew list (1845); newspaper stories which cover the ship record relating to: ‘Dublin Corporation Repeal, ‘report of The Land Commission,’ various selected pieces of poetry, local Coleraine and Ballymoney stories, ‘bomb victim meets her rescuer’; an anti-Catholic note on the difference between the protestant and Catholic Church (1980s); extracts from the Coleraine Chronicle (1980s); a thank you card to Lizzy; a note ‘when I read the Bible through’; stories on: ‘Private Quigg V.C.,’ ‘Ulster Rallies to help son of terror victim,’ ‘from Coleraine with love,’ ‘experts examine death crash plane (1987),’ ‘Christmas party at Covenanter Flats in Ballymoney,’ ‘Six Children Orphaned in Bann Tragedy (1988),’ ‘Cystic Fibrosis The Hope’; legible notes on weather, crew conditions, direction, and winds of the ship appear roughly halfway through the book outlining journeys around the Cape of Good Hope to Calcutta and St. Helena from London Port (1845-46).

Contents: newspaper fragments on subjects such as: selected poetry, ‘Ballymena Y.M.C.A.,’ ‘Ancient History on the coast road,’ ‘The Massacre of Glencoe’ (1859), ‘puzzles and jokes,’ ‘Ould Ireland,’ ‘Banquet to Sir Redvers Buller,’ ‘The Great Meteor Shower of 1899,’ ‘History of the O’Neill Family,’ ‘Assassination of the New Chief Secretary for Ireland’ (1882), ‘The Victorian Era’ (a history), ‘Cecil Rhodes- a study of a career,’ ‘Mr Chamberlain in Birmingham,’ newspaper illustrations of Ballymena (1868), ‘The Gobbins- Norwegian Scenery at Home,’ ‘The Crusades- a remarkable series of military expeditions,’ ‘The Egyptian Crisis: Bombardment of the forts’ (1882), ‘Alexandria in Flames,’ ‘The King and Ireland- The Home Rule Question’ (1903), ‘An Active Lunar Volcano,’ ‘Pius the Tenth: Crowned on Sunday’ (1903), ‘Walks about Ballymena,’ ‘Yankee Humour,’ ‘Dublin University and Degrees for Women’ (1903), ‘The Science of the Year 1903,’ ‘Irish Breach of Promise Case,’ ‘the Irish language copybook,’ several ‘Historical and Topographic etchings,’ ‘the future of the English language’.
A scrapbook of news clippings from the 19th century contains an index with hand-labelled page numbers. On the other side, there is a letter book for the Bank of Ireland [?], containing handwritten information on subscription updates and a record of letters received from various recipients starting in 1856. Contents: a detached copy of the Morning News (July 31st, 1861); a note from the ‘Dublin Protestant Association’ on a poor relief bill (1862); an opinion note from the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland (1860); notably, Irish Times Newspapers from when they first started publishing (1861); various pasted newspaper stories including: a story on a parliamentary session on Feb. 3rd, 1857 with handwritten notes, stories on the Downpatrick election of 1857 with notes, ‘The National Board of Education,’ sections on elections in different Irish counties, ‘Imperial Parliament,’ three pages of ‘The General Election’ (1857), ‘Anti-English demonstrations in France’ (1858), ‘The Bishop of Exeter’s Charge to his Clergy,’ ‘The New Reform Bill,’ police correspondence, ‘To the Orangemen of Ireland,’ ‘House of Lords-National Education Ireland,’ ‘pastoral address of the Roman Catholic Archbishops... to the Catholic clergy and people of Ireland’ (1859), ‘The Education Question’ (1860), ‘The Lord Bishop of Ossory on National Education’ (annotated), the Newry Telegraph front page (June 3rd, 1875), ‘Orange intelligence’ (1875), page from the ‘Downshire Protestant’ (1875), Orangemen articles (1870s), a New York letter fragment (1880), a page on ‘the special constables,’ two articles from the Londonderry Sentinel and The Irish Times on the death of J.L. Cole (1882), ‘The Loyal Cause in Ulster.’
A ‘Scrap and Crayon Book’ containing newspaper articles from 1955–1962. Notable articles include ‘£100,000 Gift to help Army Museum’ (1955), ‘Princess Margaret Flies in for Ulster Visit Tomorrow’ (1958), ‘rural council buys a lodge for £2,500,’ ‘Unions Resist U.T.A. Plan for One-Man Buses,’ an aerial newspaper photograph of Enniskillen, ‘Union Jack on Public Buildings.’
An album scrapbook with a beautiful pencil illustration entitled ‘News Paper Cuttings (dated October 1881). Stories are all from the ‘Family Herald;’ they include 'a Happy New Year,’ ‘What is a Cold?’ ‘The Burden of Life,’ ‘Self-Occupied,’ ‘Past, Present, and Future,’ ‘The Art of Being Happy,’ a 1903 welcome for King George, ‘Thoughtland,’ ‘Nerves,’ ‘Gossip about indigestion.’
A newspaper cutting book containing photographs and news articles from the late 19th century. Contents: an article on the marriage of Lady Anne Lindsay (1883); the front of ‘Illustrazione Italiana issue 12th December 1882, containing a story on the death of the Duke of Sermoneta (in Italian); a front page of ‘The World’ October 13th, 1886 issue; stories on the sale of Lord Crawford’s libraries (1887); article from the Aberdeen Observer ‘The Gift of Dunecht Observatory to the Nation (1888); The Financial News Article on ‘The Resurrection of Electric’ (1888); ‘The New Tyranny at Eton’ (1889); ‘Compulsory Games at Public Schools (1889); photographs of Lady and Lord Wantage and their family along with a newspaper story on them; photographs of their estate (1880s).

Contents: a Royal Mail note to someone about leaving Bangor (1935); an Englishgate hotel business card; souvenir photographs and postcards from Scotland; correspondence from the Englishgate Hotel about leaving Carlisle; a small book on ‘The Harrogate Cure’; images, a train or bus ticket, and correspondence from York (1935); images and letters from Scarborough; a postcard and note from Newcastle Upon Tyne; postcards and a note from Stirling/Aberfoyle; a note from Spean Bridge; pullout photocards of Loch Katrine dated 1930; postcards of Argyll, Glen Croe, Loch Awe, Whitby, Rydal Lake, Grasmere Lake, Inverary.

Two newspaper scrapbooks on transport headlines from the 1950s and 1960s Contents: Stories such as: ‘Britain goes all out for super-atom ships’ (1961); ‘Beautiful View, says the first U.S. man in space (1961); G.N.R. engine goes to museum (1955); ‘A Manx Tale’ (1956); ‘Railway Queen’s Fate in Doubt’; ‘Corporation turns down Folk Museum’ (1964); ‘Iona Currach is presented to the museum (1964); ‘Railways: the old order changes’ (1958); ‘Train crashes in fog’; ‘UTA gets more diesel trains’ (1959); ‘Runaway goods train in Crash on Bridge’ (1959); ‘80 young lives lost when coaches ran away’ (1959); more miscellaneous news concerning train and other vehicle crashes.
Scrapbook pasted into Medical Relief, Stewartstown Dispensary District, Cookstown Union Register. Notes on patients and illness still legible (1919-1920). Pasted items include newspaper articles on motorcycle engine parts, anthropology, and palaeontology.
Scrapbook labelled "Hautes Nouveautés Soieries, Saison d'Été 1926 [JRCie Paris]". The original book features illustrations of women modelling fashion styles, including silk dresses and hats. Numerous clippings from the 1930s have been inserted, sourced from publications such as Picture Post, People's Friend, Woman's Own, and The Christian Herald, covering topics like dressmaking, beauty, knitting, and recipes.
