Scope and content
Various materials from the Folklore Project at Queen’s University Belfast in 1994–95 involving the Department of Gaelic Studies and tutor Dr Fionnuala Williams. The programme required that students interview older people about various topics of folklore in their lives as a part of their coursework. The collection gives great insight into folklore across Ulster and beyond in the early 20th century. Contents: a tape transcript from Geraldine T. Shannon interviewing Mrs. Nan Molloy Derrymagone of Moy County Armagh; subjects include Verna Railway Station, Ceilidhes; a typescript on Fairylore from Donegal and Belfast by D. Bossence, containing photographs of a ‘fairy shoe’; an interview transcript of Paddy O’Hanlon by Paul Rainey, concerning his profession of Diener, Halloween, old remedies, and burial practices; a handwritten interview transcript with Seamus McDermott about clay pipes (1995); an interview with Eileen Hamilton concerning relations and lineage (1993); a pipe makers Belfast directory from 1812–1937; drawings of the pipes; a transcript of an interview with Simon Marshall concerning Halloween pranks, ghost stories, Banshees, etc. (1994); an interview transcript with Teresa McCaffery concerning fairy trees, superstitions, ceilis, rituals of flower collection (1994); interview transcript of Edmond Mowat concerning street games, memories of Enniskillen, American soldiers stationed in world war two, and skipping rhymes (Mar. 1995); interview transcript of Teresa Slavin concerning supernatural occurrences and her life; Declan Forde, a Bardic Poet? Interview in 1994; interview transcript with Peter Hughes concerning cures for mumps in the 1940s (1994); an interview transcript with Mr. Terry Lilley concerning wakes with a photograph (1994); an interview transcript with Mrs. Halog Lloyd, remembering her childhood, contains a photograph affixed (Apr. 1995); ‘The girls go to the Ceili’ a interview story from Co.
