Scope and content
D.B. McNeill and Frank (F.H.W.) Green were brothers-in-law. McNeill lectured at the University of Southampton and served as a non-executive director of the McNeill Group, a Belfast-based company in the construction and supply sector. He published several books, including three transport handbooks published by the Ulster Museum, as well as four books on local transport history. Green also taught at Southampton and was involved in the formation of the Institute of British Geographers and the Association of British Climatologists. He published many papers in various geographical disciplines. His collection of British bus timetables was considered by the Omnibus Society to be possibly the largest private collection in existence and formed part of the donation made after he died in 1983. The strength of the collections lies in its early bus timetables covering the small independent operators, with coverage encompassing all the United Kingdom, Ireland and elsewhere. McNeill requested that his 2003 donation be merged to create the McNeill-Green Collection. The donation consists of photographs, negatives, timetables, promotional leaflets, Bradshaw's Guides, guides to the London Underground and tram services, touring guides, road and route maps, postcards, catalogue index cards and books. It covers aviation, bus, maritime and railways, encompassing all of Ireland, Great Britain, and foreign material.
